Be still

I am sure that at some point on this Christian journey, whether during a personal study or in a sermon, many of us would have come across the scripture in Psalm 46:10 "Be still and know I am God".

A few weeks back, I started to meditate on what that scripture really means. The phrase "Be Still" can mean freeze, or don't move, but from a biblical point these two words take on so much more meaning.

In Luke 8 we are told of how Jesus had been busy healing people, performing miracles and when He was tired, got in a boat to escape the crowd. But while He slept on the boat, a terrifying storm arose prompting His disciples to wake Him up. Jesus stilled the storm. How? He spoke to it!

And it dawned on me, we live in such a world where just like the boat in the storm, being still is almost impossible. The world asks us, in fact, demands it of us to be busy. Yet contrary to this, God asks us to be still so that we can receive love, peace and guidance.

Google tells me that we have upwards of 70,000 thoughts a day and you and I know that those thoughts aren’t always pretty. You know the "I can’t believe I failed again" thoughts, the "God doesn't love me" thoughts, the "when will I get married" thoughts and the "I'm too fat or skinny" thoughts that cloud our minds like that violent storm and threaten to rip us apart. Instead of giving in and giving up, do as Jesus did. Silence those thoughts by saying: peace, be still. Learn to be still and know that He is God.

Prayer Focus: Dear Lord, teach me how to be still and hold my peace while You are at work in my life. Open my eyes to see that those who are with me are more than those against me.
