I love the way the Amplified Version interprets Proverb 24:12; 'If you [profess ignorance and] say, Behold, we did not know this, does not He Who weighs and ponders the heart perceive and consider it? And He Who guards your life, does not He know it? And shall not He render to [you and] every man according to his works?'
It is certainly easy for people to perceive us the way we portray ourselves to them but God knows every man's inward intentions and heart. God chose David above and beyond Samuel's persuasion that David's brothers were more physically fit to be king than him, even God concluded that men judge from the outward but He looks on the inside. We forget that there is a God that sees behind our lies and false measures.(1 sam 16:7)
Christ said to the pharisees, You are the ones who declare yourselves just and upright before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is exalted and highly thought of among men is detestable and abhorrent (an abomination) in the sight of God. [ Prov. 21:2.]
God searches the heart of every man, a man can pretend to be good on the outside to everyone but God knows who we really are. The most suitable thing to do is to submit our hearts to God and pray the David's prayer, for God to renew a right spirit within us and a heart that longs and taste after righteousness.
